Contemporary Afghan

jAJI IS A MODERN PROGRESSIVE TAKE ON AFGHAN CUISINE.

Jaji stands for those who carried their homeland in their hearts when they had to leave it behind. For families shaped by diaspora, resilience, and reinvention. For the quiet strength of grandparents whose recipes became heirlooms. Every dish is an act of preservation. Every gathering, an act of love.

The menu honors ancestral techniques while embracing the evolving voice of the Afghan diaspora. Tradition and innovation move together — layered, bold, unexpected. Familiar flavors unfold in new ways, inviting guests into something both timeless and entirely present.

This same spirit of cultural storytelling shaped Akbar and Iglesias’ first Oakland restaurant, Parche. But at Jaji, the story turns inward — personal, intimate, ancestral. Here, Afghan-American identity is not only represented — it is centered, honored, and celebrated.

Jaji is a table set for belonging.
A space where heritage breathes.
Where the past sits beside the present.
Where strangers become community over shared bread and shared memory.

At Jaji, you are not just dining.
You are witnessing resilience.
You are tasting history.
You are part of the story.

Beneath the warm glow of a woven lantern, surrounded by intricate textiles and vibrant color, laughter lingers in the air. This is the spirit of Jaji — intimate, radiant, alive with memory.

Jaji is a modern love letter to Afghanistan.

Founded by Sophia Akbar and Paul Iglesias, Jaji is more than their debut Afghan concept — it is a reclamation, a remembrance, and a celebration. Named in honor of Akbar’s ancestral Pashtun tribe and her grandfather’s family name, Jaji carries the weight of lineage and the tenderness of tribute. It is a bridge between generations. A promise that stories will not be forgotten.

For many, Afghanistan is spoken of only in the language of conflict. At Jaji, it is spoken of in the language of beauty — of saffron and smoke, of cardamom and fire, of hands passing plates across a crowded table. Here, culture is not explained. It is felt.

Discover Our Sister Restaurant in Oakland

Jaji is proud to be part of Oakland’s vibrant culinary community. Before introducing contemporary Afghan cuisine to the heart of Downtown Oakland, founders Sophia Akbar and Paul Iglesias first opened Parche, a modern Colombian restaurant that has become a standout fine dining destination in the city.

Located in Oakland, Parche celebrates bold Colombian flavors, craft cocktails, and cultural storytelling — much like Jaji, it brings heritage to life through elevated, contemporary cuisine. Together, both restaurants reflect the diversity, resilience, and creativity that define the Oakland food scene.
